Antique Rare French Art Nouveau XL Gold Marianne/Minerva Medallion Pendant, Signed F. Rasumny

$4,350.00

Extraordinary, Exceptional.

For those who love gold medallions, Art Nouveau, statement pieces, we are delighted to offer this extra-large, double sided medallion by Felix Rasumny (1869-1940). Rasumny was a distinguished French jeweler and medalist-artist working in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras — a winner of a silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1911, among other honors. His works are in the collections of museums, including the Musée D’Orsay and the British Museum.

This gold medallion features Marianne, the personification of the French Republic and “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité.” She is depicted here as Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, justice, and victory, in her breastplate and helmet. A winged angel is astride the helmet, holding a flaming torch. Look closely to see a fleur-de-list on a wing. Marianne is flanked by the Latin word “Patria” (for “country”) on one side and a diamond set sun on the other. On the reverse, we find a scrolling cartouche, with olive branches. The cartouche is empty, ready for personalization.

We have seen bronze examples of this medallion, awarded for sporting honors, dated circa 1906-08. This gold, unengraved example is wonderfully rare.

This piece is truly exceptional — the scale alone sets it apart from any other Art Nouveau gold medallion pendants we have encountered. This is a piece of wearable art.

Chain shown is not included.

Marked with signature “F. Rasumny” and “Or” (French for “gold”). and French eagle’s head, along with a maker’s mark.

18k gold, diamond.
