(SOLD) Antique Victorian Dragons and Amphorae Earrings with Vintage Pop-Up Display Box
Mythical, Classical.
The Victorians were great revivalists — incorporating decorative motifs of past eras to their personal adornments. The classical amphorae (more accurately, ewers) are given a fantastical twist in these circa 1870 earrings — a pair of fierce dragons are perched on top of the vessels, their spiked tails forming the handles. The dragons are carved in full dimension with great delicacy — with scaled, arched wings, eyes, and open mouths from which bursts of flames are surely about to emerge. We think these are works of art in miniature.
These will come with the box in which we found them — an Italian vintage leather and gold embossed box fitted inside with an integrated earring display stand. As the box opens, the stand (with the earrings hooked on) slowly swings upright, with the earrings on ready display. So whimsical and charming! (The box is seen in the first and last photos; the box in the third and fourth photos is not included).
Unmarked.
14k gold (earring wires), antique tortoiseshell.
Dimensions and weight:
● 29 mm long (ornament only); 35 mm long (including the earring wire)
● 10.5 mm wide

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. There is age-commensurate wear; of note, there is a tiny bit of loss to the tip of a wing, not readily noticeable.
