Romantic, Powerful.
This dramatic set of matching bracelets and earrings comes from mid-19th century France, when romantic historicism looked back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance for inspiration.
Designed in the Gothic Revival taste, reflecting the influence of goldsmiths such as Froment-Meurice, these bracelets are rendered in oxidized silver with vermeil highlights. Symbols of the medieval warrior knight’s weaponry embellish the bracelets — a knight’s helmet is at the center of the domed medallion, surrounded by swords, flails, and poleaxes. Additional motifs include stylized crosses and flowers. The moody, darkened silver is contrasted beautifully by the vermeil ornaments. Wear a bracelet on each wrist, as these would have been worn originally.
Each bracelet is comprised of five hinged segments, with a closure integrated into the central medallion. A pair of coordinating earrings in a period box completes this set — a rare and lucky find.
Note that while the bracelets are mates, there are slight differences between them: for example, one shows more wear than the other; one is slightly heavier; one has a design engraved on the inside. The bracelets were found with the dark oxidation, believed to be original and part of the design. The earrings had been cleaned of their patina and gently re-oxidized.
Marked with the French crab for 800 silver and partially rubbed maker’s mark.
