(SOLD) Antique Victorian Assyrian Revival Gold Hinged Bangle
The Victorians — in particular the British — were fascinated by the archeological discoveries, starting in the 1840s, of the fabled ancient Assyrian cities of Nimrud and Nineveh. Very few examples of Assyrian jewelry were found, but Victorian jewelers created their own, taking inspiration from the sculptures and architectural elements found in the ancient palaces (and bought to the Louvre and the British Museum).
Here, we have a hinged bangle bracelet decorated with a “frieze” in low relief of a procession of Assyrian figures marching toward a temple. Gold granulation and wirework border the scene. The rich gold patina brings all the incredible details into vivid relief. We live for all of this! One of our favorite recent finds.
Safety chain present; clasp closes securely.
