Antique Rare Georgian Chrysoberyl Maltese Cross and Earrings Suite, with Fitted Box

$12,500.00

Brilliant, Verdant.

We were gobsmacked when we opened the red jewel box. Nestled inside lay a Georgian set of our dreams — a large Maltese cross of the most brilliant, glowy chrysoberyl, with coordinating drop earrings. Words and photos do not adequately describe the magical allure of this demi-parure.

We love chrysoberyl. We have previously offered several 18th chrysoberyl pieces of Portuguese origin. This is the first English set we have had. Maltese crosses were the height of fashion in early 19th century England, and we believe that this cross was likely once accompanied by a matching rivière (see the small loop at the top of the cross). Can you imagine!

Today, the cross can be worn as a magnificent brooch with its current fittings, or if the buyer desires, our jeweler can add a 14k gold suspension loop to the existing small loop, so this can also be worn as a pendant. In the alternative, to wear as a pendant, simply pass the brooch pin through a chain loop (see photo). Please specify loop option at checkout.

The matching earrings are supremely wearable, composed of three, jointed segments. The bottom 2 drops are open backed. All other gemstones are set closed backed.

This set will be accompanied by the slightly later, antique fitted box from the London firm of Harvey & Gore.

A true collector’s find, but also so wearable.

Chain shown is not included.

Unmarked.

14k gold (earring wires test lower, around 10k), chrysoberyl.

Dimensions and weight:

● 54.3 mm long x 52 mm wide x 4.5 mm deep (cross)

● 31 mm long x 7.5 mm wide x 6.5 mm deep (earrings)

● 16.85 ctw chrysoberyl for the set: 10.6 ctw (cross) and 6.25 ctw (earrings); the color is yellowish-green (with green being the predominant color)

● 16.5 grams (cross) and 5.5 grams (earrings)

Period: Georgian (1800-1820)

*Note re color: The color of the chrysoberyl in this set is a very fine vivid yellowish-green (with green being the dominant tone). The gemstones are well matched. The appearance (especially in photographs) can appear a bit more yellow or more green depending on the lighting and background (and of course, the viewing monitor being used). Please contact us if you would like additional photos/video.

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. The earring wires are not original and test lower than 14k — around 10k. We have not polished or cleaned this set other than to wipe gently with a cloth and sanitize the earring wires. The antique box shows normal wear and tear. If requesting a suspension loop to be added, please allow a few business days for the work to be completed. Our jeweler advises that the added loop will remain visible when wearing as a brooch.

*For deliveries outside of the continental U.S., please contact us for shipping information.
