Antique Early 19th Century Gold Double Entwined Snake Seal Fob Pendant
A most attractive and beguiling seal fob pendant. A lozenge of orangey translucent carnelian is topped with two entwined snakes. Each snake is grasping the tail of the other in its mouth — their coiling scaled bodies sinuously forming the body and bail of the pendant. An ouroboros of sorts!
Since ancient times, the snake has represented rebirth and eternity; by the 19th century, it also came to symbolize love and fidelity. In particular, the ouroboros signified unending love. Here, the snakes are grasping the tail of the other - hard to tell where one begins and ends — another expression of the eternal bond between a couple.
The carnelian is engraved with the letters “H.K.”
Chains shown are not included.
Marked with French owl.
