Splendid, Scintillating.
We gasped when we first saw this magnificent, large scale flowerhead brooch. A plump cluster of sparkling chrysoberyl is at the heart of 11 “petals” of pavé set chrysoberyl, outlined by beaded rays of gold. The beaded gold trim is characteristic of Portuguese jewels from the last quarter of the 18th century to the very beginning of the 19th. The effect is radiant.
The chrysoberyl are a delicious, gorgeous pale green with flashes of yellow. Our gemologist counted 98 gemstones, for a total of 25 carats. We believe this brooch was once a dress jewel or a spectacular button. Today, it is a grand survivor from a bygone era and place, when Portugal was at its apogee of riches.
Consider all the possibilities of how to wear this—pinned at the shoulder, waist, as a statement “button”; worn with creativity as a “pendant” fastened to a ribbon or chain. (Photo of brooch shown on the hand is solely to illustrate scale — it cannot be worn as a ring).
We doubt we will find another Portuguese chrysoberyl brooch of this size and quality any time soon, if ever.
