Antique Double Portrait Intaglio on Carnelian of Poseidon and Demeter

$3,450.00

This brooch, early 19th century, is a rare, double portrait intaglio — of Poseidon and Demeter. Poseidon, god of the seas, is noted by his trident and Demeter, goddess of agriculture and grain, is shown with wheat and flowers in her hair.

Sensitively carved, the intaglio is highly detailed, even capturing Poseidon’s crow’s feet and the jeweled collar of Demeter.

The portrait is carved into a slice of translucent carnelian, with wonderful swirling tones of butterscotch, framed by a slim bezel of gold.

Wear this brooch on any neckline, lapel — or add it to a chain, as shown, for a dramatic pendant look.

Chain shown is not included.

Unmarked

15k gold, carnelian.

Dimensions and weight:

● 45 mm long

● 34 mm wide

● 3 mm deep

● 13.7 grams

Period: Georgian/Early Victorian

*Note that there is a trace spot of soft solder at the back, at the joint between the “C” clasp and the bezel, not readily discernible.

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present.

*For deliveries outside of the continental U.S., please contact us for shipping information.
