There is something so sumptuous and classical to the combination of yellow gold and carnelian. Here, we have a highly detailed Victorian snake entwined around a smooth tablet of butterscotch-y carnelian, circa 1850s. Of course, for the sentimental Victorians, the snake signified everlasting love — popularized when Prince Albert presented the young Queen Victoria with a snake motif engagement ring.

Admire the three dimensional scales and the articulation at the curvatures of this snake’s body. The head of the snake is set with a lively old cut diamond for a restrained hint of sparkle.

We have seen similar pendants and brooches on a smaller scale. This one is large and substantial. It likely started life as a brooch, then was converted some time ago to a pendant, with the addition of an antique spring ring.

We love the warmth of the carnelian and the gold and the East/West orientation. Luminous in the sunlight. Wear this on a favorite watch chain.
