(SOLD) Antique Superb Quality Gold and Diamond Love Token Harp Pendant
Love and Harmony.
The harp is a symbol of love and harmony. In early 19th century jewelry, love tokens bore images of harps accompanied by romantic inscriptions such as “Je réponds à qui me touche.” (I respond to the one who touches me). The addition of a crown denoted the supremacy of love.
This harp pendant, circa 1890-1900, is one of the best we have seen — realistically and crisply modeled in the round with Neoclassical details — clawed animal feet at the base, strings of gold wire wrapped around tuning pins, a classical column with bound reed embellishment surmounted by an old cut diamond at the capital. Look closely to see that the gold wires are threaded into tiny holes in the soundboard. We believe the pins may be functional!
Perhaps best of all is the hand inscription at the side of the soundbox — “Aimée” (Loved).
We are certain we will never find another quite like this one.
Unmarked.
