(SOLD) Antique Victorian Eight Point Star Brooch/Pendant
Opulent diamond star brooch, circa 1880-90. An estimated 5.5 carats of old cut diamonds scintillate, with a central diamond cluster tipped by 16 rays studded with diamonds.
Quintessentially late 19th century Victorian, on a grand scale, when diamond stars were very much in vogue. Ladies adorned their décolletage and hair with these diamond stars. A similar brooch, with collet set diamonds and diamonds set on knife wires between the “arms” can seen in Understanding Jewellery, by Bennett & Mascetti, at page 231. Empress Sissi of Austria was immortalzed by Franz Xaver Wintehalter with a constellation of diamond stars throughout her famously long tresses.
Wear this as a brooch solo or clustered with other diamond celestials. Or, screw off the removable fittings to attach a chain or ribbon to the guide wire on the reverse.
Chains shown are not included.
Unmarked.
15k-18k gold, silver, diamond.
Dimensions and weight:
● 44.7 mm diameter
● 15.5 mm deep (with brooch fittings); 11 mm deep (without brooch fittings)
